Chivas starts the Vucetich era on the right foot

15/08/2020 19:00 / Javier Quezada

The Chivas and Víctor Manuel Vucetich story could not have had a better start as the team showed pragmatic game
play and intelligence in creating opportunities on goal and Guadalajara triumphed 2-1 over Atlético San Luis this Saturday at Estadio Akron during matchweek 5 of Liga MX Guard1anes 2020 to climb up the standings into the 7-point mark.

Chivas did not waste time and started at full speed while San Luis took a while to settle in the field. However, it was San Luis who had the first incisive on goal opportunity when in the 2nd minute San Luis created the first dangerous chance as Ibañez header hit the post. Guadalajara stayed on the same offensive path and in the 7th minute ‘Cone’ glanced it brilliantly to Antuna, but Catalan managed to deflect the ball into the corner, then in the 12th minute ‘Pocho’ Ponce delivered a through ball to JJ that smashed in a shot on target that the keeper saved.

San Luis fought back and took over the ball and in the 24th minute Quiroga was close to sending the ball into the net, but fortunately, 'Toño' arrived first, three minutes later in the 27th minute came the best first-half chance for Guadalajara when JJ squeezed a great through ball to Antuna who unleashed a rocket straight towards the GK’s body. In the 37th minute San Luis fought back with a good lobbed ball into Quiroga who used his chest to pass it to Ibañez who unleashed a rocket that almost hit the target. By the end of the first half, San Luis seemed more comfortable on the pitch while el Chiverío lost ball control and in the 41st minute Ibañez almost gave the lead to San Luis with another dangerous header from the left side of the box.

In the second half, it was San Luis that started at full throttle. In the 47th minute Ibañez took a left-footed shot from outside the box off target. It did not take long for El Rebaño’ to regain ball possession and in the 53rd minute Sepúlveda went into the attacking half and attempted a shot that went way above target. In the 61st minute Chivas took the lead following a superb run by Antuna who found ‘Cone’ inside the box who showed his mettle, controlled the ball, side stepped a San Luis defender and sent it home to find the back of the net in spectacular fashion. Chivas’ lead was short lived. In the 69th minute San Luis got the equalizer as Barrera crossed it for Quiroga who outjumped Hiram Mier and unleashed a header past Rodríguez. The breaking point arrived in the 71st minute when Catalán was sent off after a bad foul on ‘Chicote’.

Chivas continued to suffocate a man-down San Luis and in the 76th minute Cisneros almost got the lead but his shot went into the far post, in the 79th minute Chivas pressure finally paid off as Beltrán crossed a dropped ball fantastically into Calderon who smashed his header past Carlos Rodríguez to regain the lead. San Luis turned up the pressure and in the 88th minute, had one last chance when Noya shot from just inside the box but ‘Toño’ showed his skills and saved the ball brilliantly. Chivas will face Toluca next Sunday, August 23rd at Estadio Nemesio Diez.
