Chivas' presence on Spanish soil undoubtedly brings back many memories about the relationship that Mexico's most popular team has had with that European country’s soccer throughout its history.
Milestones of the red & white club, unprecedented rivalries, preseason postcards and links between the current protagonists and the aforementioned nation of the Iberian Peninsula... we tell you all this and more in the 5 things you should know about Chivas' Spain Tour:
- Guadalajara was the first Mexican team to tour Europe. In 1964 they played 10 games in that Continent, 4 of them in Spain: against Barcelona, Sporting de Gijón, Sevilla and Mestalla (Valencia at that time).
- Chivas returns to Spain after a bit more than 10 years; their previous stay was in the summer of 2012, when they did their preseason in Peralada, Catalonia.
- El Rebaño's most recent match against a Spanish team was on July 23 of 2019, a goalless draw with Atlético de Madrid in Dallas, Texas, as part of the International Champions Cup.
- Veljko Paunovic will face one of the teams in which he played. El Chiverío's coach played for Getafe for 2 seasons (2005-2007).
- 2 Chivas players considered for this tour had a spell in Spanish soccer: Luis Olivas at Tudelano and Pavel Pérez at Toledo, both in the 2019-2020 season of Segunda B.
