On a day like today, but 5 years ago, Guadalajara lived one of its most special nights, since after a vibrant penalty shootout against Toronto, it was proclaimed champion of the CONCACAF Champions League at the Akron Stadium.
More than 40,000 Chivas fans attended the event, plus thousands more who watched the match at La Minerva.
That night, Chivas managed to break a 56-year drought without lifting an international title, and it was by no means an easy task. First, they had to overcome the freezing weather in Toronto, where, despite the -5 degrees Celsius, they won 1-2. Subsequently, the second leg was played at the Akron and the game was completely the opposite.
The match kicked off with a wonderful goal by Orbelín Pineda, who made the gap in the aggregate even wider, however, the Canadians did not give up and scored immediately through Altidore. Before the end of the first half, Giovinco evened the aggregate score with a great shot to the near post.
We would have thought that the equalizer would have silenced the Akron... but no! The red-and-white fans did not stop cheering and believing in the team, so the match went to penalties and Chivas won 4-2 in the shootout to lift their second CONCACAF title.
