Chivas falls to Cincinnati in Leagues Cup debut

28/07/2023 15:23 / Enrique Noriega y Javier Quezada

Cincinnati, Ohio.- Guadalajara did not get the desired debut in the Leagues Cup, as they had to fight against a series of adversities and ended up losing 1-3 against Cincinnati at TQL Stadium. The match, which started on Thursday night, had to be suspended due to a thunderstorm threat at 60' and was concluded on Friday at noon.

The match was marked by a series of controversial actions, such as a very rigorous expulsion of 'Tiba' Sepúlveda on a play that was not clearly a goal, a penalty that was not scored for a handball inside the area and a goal against that was clearly offside and which was not reviewed by the VAR, to mention just a few.

Despite the defeat, Chivas only needs to beat Sporting Kansas City next Monday to advance to the next phase of the Leagues Cup.

Goals:
- Cincinnati took the lead at 1' through Brandon Vázquez, who unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box that left Raúl Rangel with no chance.

- The home side struck for the second time at 8' and once again the author was Vázquez, who appeared in the six yard box and with the inside of his foot sent it into the back of the net.

- Chivas scored in the play that restarted the match on Friday. At 60', Cristian Calderón took a throw-in, which Antonio Briseño extended with his head inside the area where the ball cleared the goalkeeper and ended up in the net.

- At 72', Vázquez scored his hat-trick when he appeared inside the area and in a clearly advanced position to push in a powerful pass from Barreal. The referee refused to review the play on the VAR.

Dangerous actions:
- Chivas generated the first real danger at 36' through Roberto Alvarado, who broke on a driving run down the right flank, however his shot went just over the home goal.

- Early in the second half, Víctor Guzmán came close to scoring a long-range goal, but his shot went just wide.
