Ciudad Juárez - Chivas returned to Liga MX play with a 1-1 draw against Bravos de Juárez, a result that was tainted by a refereeing controversy. El Rebaño held the lead for most of the match thanks to a goal by Alexis Vega, but in the final stretch of the game, center referee, Fernando Hernández, in his comeback after his 12-match suspension, awarded a penalty for a sweep by Gilberto Orozco in which there was NO contact made with Avilés Hurtado.
This result cut short Veljko Paunovic's team's perfect run in the Apertura 2023, but did not prevent them from retaining the overall super leadership of the competition by reaching 10 points after 4 matches played.
The goals
- Guadalajara took the lead at 20' in a one-two between Alexis Vega and Roberto Alvarado, which left "Piojo" facing the goal to take a powerful shot. Goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera coughed up the rebound, which Vega took advantage of to counter with his left foot and send the ball into the net.
- At 83', Avilés Hurtado tied the score by deceiving Miguel Jiménez on a penalty kick, which the referee flagged for a sweep by Gilberto Orozco Chiquete in which he did not make contact with the Colombian, and which the referee refused to review in the VAR.
The dangerous ones:
- At 7' Gilberto Sepúlveda denied the ball with his head on a good backward run when the ball threatened to fall into the danger zone.
- At 10', Alexis Vega unleashed a right-footed shot that goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera controlled in two stages.
- At 25', Aitor García tried a shot from outside the area, but his shot went over the goal.
- At 31' Miguel Jiménez made a firm and very safe save after Amaury Escoto headed a shot inside the box.
- At 52' From a direct free kick taken by Sebastián Saucedo, "Wacho" Jiménez dove to his right to deny the ball with one hand.
- At 55', on a ball into the box, "Tiba" Sepúlveda put the ball to the far post for Alejandro Mayorga, who came up just short of making contact to push it in.
