Highlights of the draw between Chivas and América

16/05/2024 16:44 / Enrique Noriega

The first chapter of the Clausura 2024 Semifinals was finally written, as Guadalajara and América played to a goalless draw at the Estadio Akron on Wednesday. For this reason, the first finalist of the tournament will be defined in the second leg, to be played at the Coloso de Santa Úrsula.

After the adrenaline of the match has died down, it's time to break down and analyze the first leg of the tie.

General analysis

Chivas clearly dominated the action throughout the 90 minutes, as they managed to block every América attack thanks to Fernando Gago's effective game plan. The Guadalajara side managed to generate the most dangerous chances of the game, but for various reasons they were unable to take advantage of the scoreboard.

The leap in quality and competitiveness that Guadalajara has made in recent weeks is notorious, as they have become a very difficult team to play against, both because of their extraordinary defensive work and because of how uncomfortable it is to defend against them when they take possession of the ball.

Highlights

The Rebaño's pressure was so effective that they stole many balls during América's outings, which allowed them to defend higher up and in turn forced América to defend very close to their goal. In addition, Fernando Gago's team showed something they lacked in the second leg against Toluca: control in tense moments, the Chiverío were able to manage the match and its emotions through long possessions and a coherent occupation of space.

The unfinished business for Guadalajara is decision making, this will play a very important role in the final match next Saturday at the Azteca Stadium. It is important to remember that Chivas only needs a win to qualify for the Grand Final of the Clausura 2024.

Most valuable player

Alan Mozo: The Rebaño right back earned this distinction for his effectiveness in individual duels, anticipating Alejandro Zendejas on multiple occasions, stealing the ball from Quiñones and helping 'Tiba' and 'Guti' protect their flanks. He was also good with the ball, giving the team depth on the right and allowing 'Piojo' to occupy other interior zones.
