At the beginning of the 1960s, Guadalajara was in a tremendous soccer moment, which crystallized with the winning of a large number of trophies. However, today we want to remember when Chivas won its first CONCACAF title, after defeating Comunicaciones of Guatemala in a convincing manner.
The Rebaño Sagrado's path in this competition began at the end of April 1962, when they left Costa Rica's Sport Herediano on the road. That series was won by the Chiverío with an overall score of 0-5. The first leg was played at the Jalisco Stadium and ended 2-0, thanks to a brace by Don 'Chava' Reyes. The final duel took place in the Costa Rican country and Guadalajara managed to win with authority by 0-3, with goals from Javier Valdivia, Javier Barba and Francisco Flores.
After advancing from the semifinal series, Chivas' opponent was Comunicaciones of Guatemala, who reached the Final after defeating Sithoc of the Netherlands Antilles 3-1.
The Final kicked off on July 29 of that year at the Mateo Flores Stadium in front of more than 50 thousand spectators, who witnessed how the Rebaño Sagrado dominated the match and defeated Los Cremas 1-0 with a goal by Javier Valdivia. The second leg was played at the Jalisco Stadium on August 21, 1962 and was an authentic recital by the squad coached by Javier de la Torre, beating the Guatemalans 5-0.
Chava' Reyes was the star of that match, scoring 3 goals, while 'Bigotón' Jasso scored another 2. After the 6-0 aggregate win, Chivas officially became the first club-level champion in the history of CONCACAF.
