When it comes to remembering players who left their mark on the history of Chivas, there are several aspects to consider, among them talent, quality and, of course, a successful career with the Rojiblanca. Today, on his 68th birthday, we remember Sergio Lugo, a perfect example of this.
No matter which Guadalajara statistic is consulted, his name will surely appear in several of those rankings. His 11 seasons as a player of the Guadalajara team back him up, in which, under the guidance of Alberto Guerra on the bench, he became a true bastion of the Rebaño Sagrado.
If we go to the players with the most official appearances with Guadalajara, we find him in eighth place with 323. He is also among the players with the most minutes played, as he has more than 28 thousand as a Rojiblanco. He was also present in the Final Phases: he played 33 direct elimination matches, the seventh highest in the history of Chivas. As if that were not enough, he can also boast of having played in 22 Clasicos de Mexico, one of the 10 players with the most appearances for Chivas in that match.
His character was decisive in influencing his teammates so that Chiverío could overcome two consecutive runner-up finishes in the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons, which led to the well-deserved reward in the 1986-87 campaign, when together with a golden generation with names such as Fernando Quirarte, Javier 'Zully' Ledesma, Demetrio Madero, they lifted Chivas' ninth title in the maximum circuit against Cruz Azul.
He hung up his boots in 1998, but decided to continue playing soccer as a coach, and destiny took him back to the club where he built his legend: in 2011, he joined the coaching staff of 'Sheriff' Quirarte, recalling those times when they shared the field during their time as players.
